Please see the Tutorial for full instructions on how to use the Sims 3 UIC.

Quick Guide
  1. Download the Sims 3 UIC from one of the links below. You can choose either the installer or the standalone version (no installation required).
  2. Go to the location that you saved the download. If you chose the installer you will need to run it. The standalone version just needs extracting from the ZIP file. Once you have performed either of these steps, you can delete the ZIP/MSI file if desired.
  3. Run the Sims 3 UIC. The installer will create a shortcut on the Desktop/Start menu, which you can use everytime. You would run the standalone version from wherever you extracted it to.
  4. If you have not already done so, send your lot or sim to the Launcher.
  5. Click the Open button in the Sims 3 UIC and then open the Sim3Pack that you sent to the launcher.
  6. Use the Prev & Next buttons, to select the image you want to replace. The first image is usually the default upload image.
  7. To replace the selected image, click the Replace button. Browse to the image that you would like to use, then select it and click OK. PNG files at a resolution of 512 x 512 pixels are the standard format to use. If you use another format/size it will automatically be converted to the standard image specification.
  8. When you have finished replacing all of the images that you want to, it is time to save the changes. Clicking Save will add the changes to the current Sims3Pack file, thus overwriting it.
  9. Once the save process is complete, click the Exit button.
  10. The file in the Launcher will now be updated, but the image that is shown in the Launcher will not change! This is normal.
  11. Proceed to upload your lot or sim to the Exchange. Once it is on the Exchange, the replacement image(s) should be visible!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is the Sims 3 UIC available for Mac users?
After a long wait, a Mac version of the Sims 3 UIC is finally available!
Q. Are there any free graphics editors available to download?
The 4 free graphics editors that I would recommend trying out are GIMP, Paint.NET, Serif PhotoPlus and Pinta;

GIMP is great if you are running Windows or Mac OS X. It provides a lot of features found in commercial software, but is completely free.
   Download GIMP for Windows
Download GIMP for Mac OS X

Paint.NET is for Windows only, but is a very functional editor. It is also quite easy to use.
   Download Paint.NET

Serif PhotoPlus Starter Edition is another Windows only product, but it definitely worth a mention.
   Download Serif PhotoPlus

Pinta is another editor that is available for both Windows and Mac OS X users. It is somewhat based on Paint.NET, making it very easy to use. Pinta for Mac OS X, requires the Mono framework (download link at Pinta website below). Pinta for Windows requires Gtk# (also linked at Pinta website).

Q. Why won't my lot or sim upload, after changing some images?
Upload errors in the launcher can happen for a variety of reasons;

If there are problems at EA's end, then you will have trouble uploading anything.

If you replace all or most of the images in a Sim3Pack, you may not be able to upload it. This is usually because the file size has increased and can no longer be uploaded in the 100 second timeout limit, that EA seem to have set for uploads.

Of course, this tool is also not supported in anyway by EA. This means that in some circumstances, the Sims 3 UIC just may not produce a valid Sims3Pack. In this case there is not much you can do, other than upload it with out replacing any images.
Q. What does ERROR #xx mean? (Error Code Explanations)
ERROR #01: Could not read the Sims3Pack!

Under normal usage, there are three main reasons for this error. The first is that the Sims3Pack file you are trying to open is a read only file. If this is the case then the file is either set to read only or the account you are logged in as, does not have the correct permissions. The second reason is that the Sims3Pack file is already open in another application. This just means that you will need to close the application that has it open, as Sims3Pack utilities developed by other people may lock the file if it is opened with them. The third reason is that the Sims3Pack file is corrupt. This means that the Sims 3 UIC cannot interpret the file correctly, thus causing an error.

ERROR #02: Not a valid image file!

This error should very rarely appear. If it does, it could mean that the image that you are trying to load is corrupt. Alternatively, it could mean that the image you are trying to load is not actually an image file. This can happen if a non-image file is accidentally renamed so that it appears to be an image file. (Example: Sims3.EXE renamed to Sims3.JPG <- This now appears to be a JPEG image file.)

ERROR #03: Image format not supported!

This error is the least common of them all. It will probably never occur, during your usage of the Sims 3 UIC. If it does, it usually means that although it has let you select a particular image, it is in a format not actually supported by the program.

ERROR #04: Could not replace the image!

If this error occurs, it will usually mean that one of the temporary files that the Sims 3 UIC creates is locked. This means that another process on the system is using the file. Possible causes of this are anti-virus programs, as they commonly scan file activity. If for some reason your anti-virus program locks one of the temporary files, this error will occur. (The chances of an anti-virus program being the cause are unlikely).

ERROR #05: Could not save the Sims3Pack!

This will either be due to reasons mentioned in ERRORS #01 & #04, or because the Sim3Pack that you have open is in use by another application. If you have it open, try closing the Sims 3 Launcher, as this could possibly lock the file.
Q. Why do I get the error: "Sims3UIC" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash.
Please see Mountain Lion Fix for damaged application error.
